Nice blog from Theo..its not easy to contemplate such a trip and harder to decide to leave the two lads.We all appreciate Theo's effort in the early days when the support for each other would be most needed as it became apparant just what was required to finish this cycle.
See you soon,Derek

Hi everyone
As some of you may know by now I have retired from our cycle trip and am now back in Dublin while the lads are bravely continueing on across Romania, an unknown country that is seldom explored by most westerners and the 2nd biggest country in the EU. They hope to make it to the Black Sea in less than two weeks. In total a distance of about 3500k!!.
What the lads have achieved even thus far is incredable, they have cycled about 2500k in less than a month. In that time they have cycled everyday bar 3 days off the bike. 1 day in Basel and 2 days in Budapest, which is where we decided to go our separate ways. We parted on a high and the lads fully understood that I had no desire to carry on and my reasons for not doing so.
You get used to the physical pain of this type of cycling, your body just gets used to the pain of a sore arse, legs, shoulders etc. Its the mental pain of having to get up everyday at the crack of dawn to cycle 100-150k a day everyday, sometimes through wind and rain, on bad, busy or potholed filled roads. Finishing your usually 12hr day cycle to pitch up a tent and sleep badly in a cold damp field only to get up and do the same (often boring) long cycle all over again. And if we were lucky enough to get a bed for the night it would usually be shared between the 3 of us and our stinky socks, farts and snoring!. I had no desire to do that for another 2 weeks everyday non stop until I go back to work.
The original Cycle for Rob Euro trip that I proposed was much shorter, from Belguim to Budapest over 2-3 weeks covering 1200-1500k along the Rhine and the Danube, which I felt for me was do-able. It balooned into this 3500k Monstersaurous cycle. I made it felt that for me this trip was too far, too time consuming and that I had other commitments at home, however I went along because I never not want to at least attempt a Cycle for Rob, it has been, is and will always be a proud tradition for myself, Conor and Tim. Despite not completing the trip I still feel I can hold my head high, I had covered hundreds upon hundreds of miles in a very short time. I cycled further and faster than any of my other mates and I dont think there is any shame being 2nd best to such fine cyclists as Conor and Tim.

Despite all the pain, heartaches, lonelyness, arguements, cold nights, flat tyres and broken panniers, this cycle has been an amazing adventure and we are so thankful that we have been given the freedom to do something like this. I feel that this trip has brought us closer together, and closer to Robs spirit. We were doing something that he so loved to do, something Im sure he most probably would be doing with us, where he here. I think we all felt his presence whilst cycling along the tranqual rivers and forests of the Eurovelo or Robovelo as we had christened it.

I have no regrets, bar any time I lost my cool, whether justified or not. What the lads are doing is totally hardcore and totally amazing, only a handful of people on Earth have ever done something like this. They’ll most probably laugh when they see this but as far as Im concerned these lads are heros and should be treated that way!!. Im talking open top ticker tape parade here, so show your love when they get back. And if you have logged on to this site and havnt yet donated money to Robs Trust then please do, its such a worthy cause. Oh and anyone who donated money to me expecting me to complete the trip, sorry no refunds! ; )

Now Im off to put my expensive bike in the cupboard, along with my electric guitar, my skateboard and my karate suit!!!

Thanks for reading, cyaz on the road!

cheers, Theo
